We are looking to have a display of dartfrogs in our showroom and are currently in the process of creating the correct habitat for them, We are going to use a 60 x 45 x 60 Exo terra glass terrarium as the enclosure and the aim is to create a state of the art display using current on the market automation devices and equipment,
The overall aim of the project is to create a miniature "zoo" like display using off the shelf products to demonstrate what can be achieved with the huge range of products now available.

The story so far, well we have stripped out the terrarium of its previous occupants given it a good clean out and have started to install the basic equipment. We are using a Lucky reptile "Super Rain" system, this is basically a header tank of water that is pumped under high pressure into a series of three mister jets. Controlling this is a Lucky Reptile Humidity control, quite a nifty device that measures humidity within the enclosure and switches a device either on or off at a set point. There are quite a few variables with the controller that will need playing with to maintain the right balance. For example I can set the required humidity level at 90% and a switching tolerance of 1% so that when it hits 89% the Super rain kicks in, problem being that the super rain pumps out so much water by the time the humidity controller reads the atmosphere and sends the stop signal to the super rain its already pumped out a load of water and put the humidity over 100% which will eventually flood the terrarium, I need to find the optimum switching tolerance so that the super rain will only spray in the right amount of water equivalent to what has evaporated allowing for the lag on the controller! If this fails to work I may try controlling the rain on a timer although this will be less accurate or we could switch to a fogger based system.

Watch this space! :?

Ok, after much playing about I have discovered a few things! One is that despite the super rain being a sealed sytem that is pressurised gravity still works and if you place the water tank above the spray jets then syphoning will take place and the water tank will empty into the enclosure over night

After much tinkering I have managed to get the ratio right, humidity level is set at 90% and switches at a 5% difference. so when the humidity level hits 85%, the pump kicks in and it rains for approximately 20 seconds which takes us back to 100% which slowly evaporates down. In an 9 hour period it only rains twice :D But on much drier days I guess it will rain more often.

It is also important to position the sensor well out of the way of the spray jets but somewhere to get a good humidity reading, I have found the best position to be directly behind a spray jet and make sure no other jets are aiming at it.

Once the humidity plumbing was sorted, I have had time to fill in the substrate of LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) which has been very well rinsed, the spray jets have been disguised using Exo Terra bolivian croton plants. These plants were chosen on the very loose premise of that they are supposed to look like something from the bolivian jungle (correct me if I am wrong?) which is in south america which is also where the dart frogs come from!

A big Xaxim trunk has been added (whats Xaxim? I hear you say) Xaxim is basically dead bits of an endangered tree fern  So probably will be banned from import soon and as such is quite expensive :( But the dead fern contains spores of the fern and mosses and under the right conditions will sprout interesting new life (if you are lucky):D

Plenty of live spider plants, orchids and bromeliads have been added along with two lucky reptile half coconut caves covering shallow water dishes. and some live sphagnum moss to finish it off.

Pictures will be here soon :)

You might need to chase them up a bit as no ones been in touch, If you do work experience you can give us your ideas on invert section but definately no spiders! Scorpions might be ok though!

Ok no spiders lol

I think what Lou said about some scorps in a Tank with a black light would look awesome!
Plus Emperor Scorpions can be kept in groups so it would look real good!

Monday is the day we talk about work experience so il see...
